Emergencies at Two Rivers Vets

In an emergency ring 01899 220073 (Biggar) or 01721 722879 (Peebles) 24 hours 365 days

Our vets are available to registered clients 24 hours a day for emergencies. During the day, or at night time, call either of the usual surgery numbers and we will be able to help you whether it’s a pet emergency, equine emergency or farm emergency.

Pet emergencies

For pet emergencies, it is usually better for you to come to the surgery than for us to visit you at home, as we then have access to a much wider range of diagnostic tests and treatments which are often required for emergency situations.

Please call the surgery before setting off so that we can make sure that a vet is in the practice and available to see you immediately, and our veterinary nurses can start to prepare any emergency equipment and drugs that might be needed. Out-of-hours, there is not usually a vet present in the surgery, so calling ahead is essential so that the vet can travel to meet you there.

Equine and Farm Emergencies

If you have an equine emergency or farm animal emergency and require a visit on an emergency basis, please call either surgery number and tell us the nature of the emergency.  We will let you know approximately how long it will be to get a vet to you, and may be able to offer advice on first aid or other things you can do to help while waiting.

Remember that horses and other large animals can be dangerous when in pain (for example with colic) so please take care while you wait.

Emergencies always come before routine work, and if necessary we will postpone routine surgeries or appointments to attend to your animal first.

Out-of-hours emergencies

If you have an emergency out-of-hours, call either of the usual surgery numbers and you will be diverted to the mobile number of the on-call vet.

If your call is not answered immediately, it may be that the vet is dealing with another emergency, or has temporarily lost mobile reception.  Please leave your name, contact number and a short message - the vet will call you back as soon as possible.  For pet emergencies, we will try to see you at the surgery you normally attend, unless it is mutually more convenient to arrange an alternative.

Telephone advice

We can also offer telephone advice out-of-hours if you are worried.  Don’t hesitate to ring if you have a genuine concern, though our vets have to work the next day so prefer not to be woken for non-urgent queries! Please note this service is for registered clients only.
