Our Veterinary Nurses
Our Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) are a hugely important part of the team. They are all fully qualified and registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. In addition we usually have Student Veterinary Nurses in both surgeries, who are in training at college and come on placement to gain practical experience in practice. Our RVNs are assisted by a full time Animal Care Assistant (ACA) in Biggar.
Veterinary Nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. Our Veterinary Nurses provide expert nursing care for all animals admitted to the practice, and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments, minor surgical procedures (under veterinary direction), and monitoring pets under anaesthetic. They play a huge role in maintaining equipment and a sterile theatre environment, maintaining drug stocks and supplies, and managing our kennels.
Veterinary Nurses also play a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets, and offer a range of services during consulting times including nail clips, blood sampling, health checks, microchipping, second vaccinations and other routine injections, weight clinics and post-op checks.
Lisa Mackintosh RVN (Biggar and Peebles)
Lisa qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2012 and previously spent 13 years working in a busy small animal, first opinion practice in Glasgow. She is originally from rural Perthshire, but moved to the Clydesdale area in 2020 and enjoys the beautiful surroundings we have to offer. Lisa spends her time looking after her young family, as well as Labrador Cuillin, Rambo the Chihuahua and Pancho the cat!
Lisa joined the team at Two Rivers in 2021 and brings a huge amount of veterinary nursing experience to the practice - she has also previously worked as a veterinary receptionist so knows how the surgery runs inside out. She works part-time, mostly in Biggar but also travels across to Peebles.
Kelly Gardiner-Penny RVN (Biggar)
Kelly spent a year in our Biggar surgery on placement while completing her veterinary nursing training, then after graduating from SRUC Barony Campus in 2021, we were delighted that she joined the team as a full time RVN.
The variety of tasks involved in veterinary nursing and a love of animals drew Kelly to the profession - she enjoys meeting patients and their owners during nursing consults, and on admission to the practice for operations. When not at work Kelly enjoys spending time with her family and paddle boarding with her two dogs.
Julie Devine RVN (Biggar and Peebles)
Julie qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in SE England in 1998, and then worked at three busy practices and a large veterinary hospital where she developed a keen interest in surgical and intensive care nursing. Julie first joined Two Rivers in 2005, and has worked in both Biggar and Peebles surgeries over the last 19 years. She currently works part-time, mostly in Biggar.
Julie says ‘My working day here might include assisting vets in the operating theatre, taking care of in-patients, running laboratory tests or advising clients on pet health care. No day is ever the same and I think that’s what makes this job so special’.
Amy McLean RVN (Peebles)
Amy is another of our very experienced nurses, qualifyng as an RVN in 2013. Amy moved to the Peebles area in 2019, and joined Two Rivers in 2022. Amy particularly enjoys wound management, radiography, surgical nursing, emergency cases and pain management. She enjoys following up animals she has been helping with when they come back in for post-op checks and bandage changes.
Out of work, Amy plays for a borders hockey team, and enjoys walking her dogs and mountain biking.
Neve Lovell RVN (mostly Peebles)
Neve began her studies as a Student Veterinary Nurse in 2018 at Edinburgh Napier University, and completed all her practical placements with Two Rivers. In the summer of 2022, we were delighted that she accepted a full time position with the practice after graduating as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.
Neve loves all aspects of the job but her favourite part is taking care of inpatients. Outside of work she enjoys socialising, reading and travelling. She is usually kept busy at home by her mischievous cocker spaniel Rafa and her rescue hamster Dustin.
Stephanie Smith RVN (Peebles)
Steph works part-time in our Peebles surgery, and is an experienced RVN, having graduated with BSc(Hons) in Veterinary Nursing in 2011. She was the Kennel Club Charitable Trust Degree SVN of the year 2009, and has also since qualified as a Clinical Coach, a Pet Health Counsellor and has ISFM certificate in feline nursing.
Steph previously volunteered as Pet Fostering Services Scotland area co-ordinator, and Cats Protection membership secretary. Her interests lie in nurse clinics, medical nursing, wildlife, animal welfare and behaviour. Outside of work she has three young children and Willow the cocker spaniel, and also is a hobby entomologist currently rearing rhinoceros beetles and overwintering a ladybird! She also enjoys baking, gardening and embroidery.

“Hi I'm Larissa, I am studying Veterinary Nursing at SRUC Barony and am currently doing my placement year at the surgery in Biggar. I am enjoying being able to put all the knowledge I have learnt throughout my course into practical use. I have loved being around animals from a young age, I have grown up around dogs and have a dog of my own. I am enjoying my time here and being part of the team at Two Rivers Vets."
Libby Davidson ACA (Biggar and Peebles)
Libby joined Two Rivers as an Animal Care Assistant in 2024, after spending a week on work experience. She provides support to our RVNs in providing high standards of care for all pets admitted to the surgery, helps out on reception, in the dispensary, and helps keep up our high standards of cleaning and disinfection.
Libby has spent most of her life looking after horses and dogs, and is hoping to one day become a veterinary surgeon. In her spare time you could find Libby side-saddle riding, competing at shows or meeting up with friends.
Hayley Fegan ACA (Biggar)
Hayley started work at Two Rivers in 2022 as an Animal Care Assistant, and in 2024, left a full time position to join her family’s plumbing business. She still helps out with the Saturday rota in our Biggar surgery.
Hayley says 'I have worked in veterinary practice for 5 years now, and became qualified as a veterinary care assistant in October of 2021. Before making the change to veterinary practice, I gained my qualification as a horse riding instructor and still teach in my spare time as well as spending time with my horse Malibu and my border collie Jess.'
